Deadline extended for counties to comply with new ADA website accessibility requirements

Counties get a one-year extension

On April 20, The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) released a new Interim Final Rule (IFR) on the implementation of Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) web-based accessibility requirements for state and local governments.

The IFR provides new guidance to reduce the cost of compliance and grants all state and local governments and extension.

Previously, counties with populations over 50,000 had until April 24, 2026 to meet the accessibility standards and counties under 50,000 population had until April 26, 2027.  Those deadlines have been extended by one year.

New Compliance Deadlines

  • More than 50,000 county population – April 26, 2027
  • Less than 50,000 county population – April 26, 2028

NACo recently hosted a webinar on the extension, which you can view here.
