Judge/executives serve communities as the chief officer of a county

The duties of county judge/executives have evolved over the years. In 1975, the county judge no longer served as a judicial officer but served as the chief executive, administrative and fiscal officer of the county.

Current responsibilities include overseeing day-to-day operations and managing departments and personnel. The judge/executive also is a voting member of the fiscal court.

The judge/executive appoints people to boards and commissions, often after fiscal court approval. They can partner with other elected officials and community leaders to influence state and federal legislation and budget decisions that affect the county.

The Kentucky County Judge/Executive Association was formed to be a liaison between county judge/executives and state and federal government entities.

KCJEA monitors the legislative process on issues that affect county governments.

According to its website, the association informs and educates local officials on issues vital to county governments through speaking engagements and regularly scheduled meetings, continually working to improve county government in the state.

Judge/executives serve four-year terms.
