County Attorneys

County Attorneys are mainstays in the judicial system
Every day – and practically every case - is different for county attorneys, and it’s their consistent willingness to help others that exemplifies just how vital they are to counties.
County attorneys prosecute all violations of criminal law in district court, including misdemeanors. They handle felony preliminary hearings in circuit court. In addition, they work with judges to issue emergency protective orders in domestic violence cases.
They support county residents through their jurisdiction over all juvenile issues including criminal acts, dependency, neglect and abuse, and county attorneys advise and represent the county in civil matters if a county is sued.
When not in a courtroom, county attorneys can still be found in the courthouse serving as legal advisor to the county.
They oversee mental commitments and disability cases, provide advice to districts, commissions and boards of the county and attend all fiscal court meetings, giving legal advice to the fiscal court and county officials in business matters.
Lastly, county attorneys collect cold checks, delinquent property taxes and delinquent child support payments.
