Crisis Intervention Strategies

This three-day event will focus on crisis intervention strategies. The third day participants will practice mock scenarios by using the VR Wrap Machine.
Class size is limited to the first 30 students to register. Everyone must register in advance.

Day 1: Introduction to De-escalation and Crisis Negotiation
◦ 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.: Section 1: Introduction, course objectives and the importance of communication in crisis situations
◦ 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.: Section 2: Communication fundamentals (verbal/non-verbal techniques, building rapport)
◦ 10:30 a.m. – Noon: Section 3: Active listening skills and role play
◦ 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.: Section 4: Active Listening Continued and Case Studies (Northpoint Training Center 2009 and Kentucky State Reformatory 2016)
Day 2: Advanced Techniques
◦ 8:30 a.m. – 9 a.m.: Section 5: Psychological dynamics of crisis
◦ 9 a.m. – 10 a.m.: Section 6: Negotiation strategies
◦ 10 a.m. – 11 am: Session 7: De-escalation techniques
◦ 11 a.m. – Noon: Session 8: Team coordination and management
◦ 1 p.m. – 2 p.m.: Session 9: Ethics and legal considerations
◦ 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.: Session 10: Case study (Southern Ohio Correctional Facility Riot) and conclusion
Day 3: WRAP VR
◦ 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m.: Role playing exercises using the WRAP Virtual Reality System
