Stay alert and safe during deer season

By Steve Clary, KACo Loss Control Specialist
October marks the beginning of the fall season, and with it comes an increase in auto collisions involving deer.

The number of deer collisions dramatically increases during the last quarter of the year, which coincides with the rut and the majority of the deer hunting season in Kentucky. The majority of collisions occur after dark, so drivers should be more cautious while driving at night.

The Safety and Loss Control Department offers the following tips for avoiding deer collisions:

  • Stay alert. Observe signs (deer crossing) posted by the state highway department, which has identified areas that are known for wildlife crossing the road.
  • Turn on high beams while driving with headlights.
  • Don’t swerve if a crash is inevitable, and don’t veer off the road.
  • Slow down. Brake as necessary and only brake hard if someone is closely following you. Tap your brakes to warn other drivers behind you.

Reminders

  • Peak season is October through December.
  • Peak time for deer collisions is between dusk and dawn.
  • If you see one deer, there are probably more nearby.

Helpful hint: Most deer collisions are covered by comprehensive coverage with most insurers and is usually very affordable relative to the amount of coverage.
