New estimates show 12 percent drop in road funding for already-strapped counties

Jennifer Burnett
The Department for Local Government has received updated FY21 County Road Aid and Municipal Road Aid estimates from the Transportation Cabinet.

Estimates for county road aid for the upcoming fiscal year have been downgraded by the Transportation Cabinet, decreasing by $16.2 million, or 12.3 percent.

Counties and cities are allocated county and municipal road aid each fiscal year. These funds are used for the construction, reconstruction, and maintenance of county roads and city streets.

A majority of counties – 90 – will take a hit in their estimated county road aid of more than $100,000 each.

County road aid is funded by motor fuel taxes, and plummeting gas prices and receipts during the COVID-19 pandemic are expected to negatively impact revenues.

According to AAA, the national gas price average is more than $1/gallon cheaper than it was a year ago. The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Kentucky is currently $1.45.
