Estimates for county road aid for the upcoming fiscal year have been downgraded by the Transportation Cabinet, decreasing by $16.2 million, or 12.3 percent.
Counties and cities are allocated county and municipal road aid each fiscal year. These funds are used for the construction, reconstruction, and maintenance of county roads and city streets.
A majority of counties – 90 – will take a hit in their estimated county road aid of more than $100,000 each.
County road aid is funded by motor fuel taxes, and plummeting gas prices and receipts during the COVID-19 pandemic are expected to negatively impact revenues.
According to AAA, the national gas price average is more than $1/gallon cheaper than it was a year ago. The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Kentucky is currently $1.45.
