2022 KACo Legislative Priority:
Develop a proactive model for the collection of electric vehicle fees that includes a direct distribution to counties.
Electric vehicle fees are levied on certain electric and hybrid vehicles in addition to standard registration fees in 30 states. Counties receive a portion of fee revenue in approximately two-thirds of the states with county road systems.
Summary:
- As of July 31, 2021, 30 states levy an electric vehicle fee.
- Electric vehicle fees range from $50 to $225, with an average rate of $120.
- Every state surrounding Kentucky has an electric vehicle fee, with an average rate of $127.
- Seventeen states also levy a hybrid vehicle fee, the majority levied on plug-in hybrid vehicles.
- Hybrid fees range from $20 to $100, with an average of $64.
- A majority – two-thirds – of the states that have county road systems allocate a portion of their electric vehicle fee revenue to counties.
