Early voting underway for Kentucky’s primary election

By Shellie Hampton, Director of Government Affairs
Ballots include candidates for president, Congress, state legislature and other offices

Kentucky’s three days of in-person no-excuse early voting kicked off Thursday May 16, allowing voters to cast their ballot ahead of Primary Election Day on May 21. Early voting is also available on Friday and Saturday, with hours varying by county as approved by their county board of elections.

For voters heading to the polls on Tuesday, May 21, polling locations must be open from 6 a.m. - 6 p.m. local time. Any voters in line at 6 p.m. will still be allowed to cast their ballot.

Because Kentucky is a closed primary state, voters may only vote in primary races for their registered party and any non-partisan local races.

In addition to the U.S. presidential race, other candidates on the ballot are seeking the following offices: U.S. House of Representatives, 5th District Kentucky Supreme Court, all members of the Kentucky House, odd-numbered Kentucky Senate districts, commonwealth’s attorneys, circuit court clerks, soil and water conservation districts, some local school boards, and some city commission/council seats including Louisville Metro Council and Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council.

Some counties also have questions on the ballot regarding the sale of alcohol.

Some noteworthy stats for Kentucky’s 100-member House of Representatives:

  • 41 candidates have no opposition (39 incumbents, 2 new candidates with no opposition)
  • 12 incumbents are not seeking re-election in the House; two are seeking open Senate seats (Rep. Keturah Herron, D-Jefferson County and Rep. Steve Rawlings, R-Boone County)
  • 31 total districts with contested primaries (21 are incumbents)
  • 28 incumbents only have general election opposition

Kentucky Senate races are staggered every two years. For this year’s races in the odd-numbered Senate districts:

  • 6 seats have no opposition (4 incumbents, 2 new candidates with no opposition)
  • 4 incumbents are not seeking re-election
  • 8 races have contested primaries (5 are incumbents)
  • 4 incumbents only have general election opposition
