Legislators heard an update this week about the state’s new County Priority Projects Program (CPPP) for funding requests related to local roads.
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) Department of Rural and Municipal Aid Commissioner Bobbi Jo Lewis testified Wednesday at the Budget Revenue Subcommittee on Transportation.
Lewis said her office received more than 1,600 project requests from counties and cities amounting to $178.3 million. Engineers from KYTC highway district offices evaluated the applications and determined $139.4 million in projects were eligible for consideration under CPPP.
Those requests were forwarded by KYTC to the legislature by the Nov. 1 deadline.
Due to the large volume of requests, Lewis said KYTC is still evaluating $5.4 million of the requests for eligibility.
The CPPP is a new program established during the 2024 legislative session, giving lawmakers more oversight of which road projects are funded. Counties were required to submit projects to KYTC by Oct. 15.
Lawmakers appropriated $20 million each year for the program. Final funding decisions for FY2026 projects will be made by the General Assembly during the 2025 legislative session.
Commissioner Lewis’s testimony also included suggestions on how to improve the application process for the future. Click here to watch the full committee meeting.
