According to the Federal Highway Administration, counties own and maintain 40,170 road miles in Kentucky – making up half of the nearly 80,000 road miles in the state.
The other half of road miles are owned by the state (35%), cities (13%) and the federal government/other (2%).
County-by-County Data
County-owned road miles vary by county ranging from 70 to 1,162 miles, with a median of 309 miles.
Counties with the greatest number of road miles to maintain include Pulaski (1,162 miles), Laurel (747 miles), Warren (716 miles), Calloway (686 miles), and Graves (659 miles).
In nearly two-dozen counties, more than 60 percent of total road miles are owned and maintained by the county, with Lee (69%), Casey (66%) and Jackson (66%) in the top three.
Counties that own and maintain the fewest number of road miles include Robertson (70 miles), Gallatin (73 miles), Carroll (89 miles), Kenton (105 miles) and Fayette (113 miles).
