County officials from across the state joined city, state and business leaders as part of the Kick Start Coalition to support a much-needed boost in funding for roads and bridges.

House Bill 580, sponsored by Rep. Sal Santoro (R-Boone), provides increased funding for state and county roads through an increase in the motor fuels tax and by establishing fees on electric vehicles.

Lewis County Judge/Executive Todd Ruckel spoke to the crowd in favor of the legislation. “With the responsibility of maintaining half of the all the roads in the state and one-third of all the bridges, counties are counting on House Bill 580 to help us make those roads safer for school buses, ambulances, fire trucks and our family members,” said Ruckel.

LaRue County Judge/Executive Tommy Turner addressed the crowd, saying: "There is no other government service we provide that affects the economic, aesthetic, social and safety issues of our communities in the enitre Commonwealth as does transportation."

Ruckel urged the legislature to take action this session and that county officials fully support the effort.

"Governor Beshear and legislators, we are here respectfully urging you to lead us into the next decade of economic growth and improved quality of life by making this investment this session,” said Ruckel. “We’ve got your back.”
