As we pass the halfway point of a historic four days of tumultuous weather including heavy rain, hail, high winds, tornadoes and flooding, counties are working hard to overcome damage to infrastructure, homes and more.
Through Friday morning:
- There were 74 tornado warnings overnight from April 2-3.
- During that time, there were seven confirmed tornadoes with more possible as damage assessments are conducted.
- The first push of rain brought 2” to 3” of rainfall that caused flash flooding leading to multiple water rescues.
Another system of rain Thursday night and Friday morning increased the flood risk with more than 3” of rainfall in many counties as significant flooding occurred. Rain will continue through the weekend, which will increase flood risk even more.
Some areas of the state, particularly western and central Kentucky, could receive a total of 10” or more of rain.
Kentucky Emergency Management will keep the State Emergency Operations Center active through at least Sunday evening to coordinate the statewide response. Many resources already have been provided to assist counties, and assistance from out-of-state sources is on the way to further enhance the state’s response capability.
