The National Weather Service StormReady program is a simple and effective way to help arm America's communities with the communication and safety skills needed to save lives and property before, during and after the event.
KACo partnered with the NWS to help all 120 Kentucky counties become StormReady certified.
That would make Kentucky only the eighth state to be completely Storm Ready. The good news is that 83 counties already have achieved this status.
Representatives from the remaining 37 counties should join us for a one-hour zoom session next Thursday, March 27, from 11 a.m. to noon, for a quick overview by Mike Kochasic of the Louisville NWS office on the StormReady process and starting an application for StormReady status.
StormReady helps community leaders and emergency managers strengthen local safety programs. In most cases, our counties are already doing most, if not all, of the things they need to be certified StormReady, and NWS and KACo are prepared to help counties with the things they aren’t doing so they can become certified.
The assistance program has real, tangible benefits including increased access to technical support from a servicing NWS Office (Paducah; Louisville; Jackson; Wilmington, Ohio; or Charleston, West Virginia) and eligibility for credit points from FEMA's Community Rating System, which provide discounts on flood insurance in participating communities.
