What are Reverse Auctions???

Reverse auctions are a procurement method in which competing suppliers reduce the price at which they are willing to sale their goods or services by submitting successively lower bids online via the internet. Under the agreement between KACo and Orbis, counties will not incur any expense to utilize the reverse auction process. Instead, the supplier that receives the bid will pay Orbis a small percentage of the winning bid price.

Scott Martin, Director of Member Services at KACo said that "KACo is excited to offer this service and the tremendous potential for savings that it provides to counties." KACo considered several different providers of online reverse auction services before deciding to partner with Orbis. "However, we felt that with Orbis' vast database of suppliers and unequalled governmental experience, they were clearly the best choice to offer these services to Kentucky's counties" Martin said.

Since its formation in 1999, Orbis has conducted over 2,000 real-time reverse auctions with more than $1.5 billion in total procurements. Savings on these purchases averaged in the range of 12 - 13%. Orbis has contracts with the States of Texas, Ohio and South Carolina and has recently been awarded a contract by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. They have also conducted auctions for the federal government, including Randolph and Lackland Air Force Bases, and more than 50 cities and counties across the country.

Orbis has also named KACo as its exclusive marketing agent for all other public entities in Kentucky. Randy Becker, Director of Sales of Orbis Online Inc. said that "Orbis Online is pleased to enter into a Strategic Marketing Agreement with KACo and looks forward to expanding this type of agreement with several other County Associations across the nation."
